The 1st Forum on Carbon Neutrality and Aquaculture Sustainability (FCNAS) 2021
7-8 November, 2021, Zhuhai, China
Background
On September 22, 2020, China solemnly pledged to the world to "reach peak emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060" ("Double Carbon" target).
On March 5, 2021, the "Double Carbon" target was first written into the government work report.
On July 16, 2021, the national carbon trading market opened in Shanghai, China.
On July 30, 2021, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee called for the release of an action plan to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 as soon as possible.
This series of intensive actions not only fully demonstrates the importance of the "Double Carbon" target as a new national strategy, but also highlights China's mission as a responsible major country. Achieving the "Double Carbon" target will have a profound impact on China's social and economic development. All walks of life should act quickly and actively to promote this great change of the times.
Food is the life of the people. Among the numerous food production segments, aquaculture is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world at present. China's aquatic products provide up to 20% of the animal protein for people, and make a positive contribution to the national food security. Now, in the context of global attention to carbon emissions, China's aquaculture, which accounts for nearly 70% of the world's total aquatic products, will usher in a golden opportunity for historical development.
On the one hand, the carbon emissions of aquaculture are far lower than that of other land-based animal protein production. On the other hand, aquaculture itself has a unique biological "carbon sink" function of carbon capture and storage, and "carbon sink fishery" has been proved to be a typical carbon negative economic model. In 2018, China removed 3.5 million tons of carbon from water bodies through aquaculture, which is equivalent to 1.5 million hectares of compulsory afforestation. The implementation of "Double Carbon" strategy will accelerate the development of green aquatic products.
On November 7-8, 2021, the 1st Forum on Carbon Neutrality and Aquaculture Sustainability (FCNAS) 2021 will be held in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province of China, and jointly hosted by China Fisheries Association, WWF (Switzerland) Beijing Representative Office and Nutriera Group. We sincerely invite counterparts from aquaculture industry, universities and research fields to gather in Zhuhai to actively explore the new low-carbon green development model of aquaculture industry!
Waiting for you in Zhuhai, China!
